What Is DSEAR?

DSEAR, or the Dangerous Substances and Explosives Regulations require all employers and self-employed people to control the risks of fire, explosions, and substances corrosive to metals within their workplace to protect themselves, their staff and members of the public.

A dangerous substance is any substance that could potentially cause harm to people by fire, explosion or metal corrosion if the correct control procedures are not in place and strictly followed. Dangerous substances can be found within any workplace and can include things such as solvents, varnishes, flammable gases, dusts and much more!

What Does DSEAR Require?

All employers must ensure that they:

  • are aware of ALL dangerous substances that are housed, or used, within their workplace and what risks they pose;
  • ensure adequate control measures are in place to remove or control the risk posed by the dangerous substances;
  • have adequate controls in place to reduce the effects of any incidents involving dangerous substances;
  • ensure you have correct plans and procedures in place to protect your staff, members of the public and your business should an emergency situation occur;
  • keep your staff up to date and fully trained to enforce your control measures and respond correctly to the dangers posed;
  • identify potential areas with explosive atmospheres within the workplace and prevent ignition sources within those areas.
